BOTTOM LINE:  Food Drive day dollar donations are down by about 18% from last year.

Our demand for services is up by 48% (first quarter 09 compared to first quarter 08).

Here’s my take on the day:  “Once again, our volunteers were AMAZING!  24 volunteer groups gave their time for this one- day blitz: schools, churches, non-profits, businesses, Rotary and Lion’s Clubs, and almost all the Canoe Clubs on Kauai! Without a doubt the volunteers were wonderful, enthusiastic, hard-working, and seemingly everywhere on Kauai!  And once again, the generosity of the Kauai community is second to none.  Even in a down economy, Kauai people willingly share to help others, especially when they know that so many of their friends and neighbors are having hard times.

While it is true that the donations were down 18% from last year, I believe this is because tourism is down by a similar percentage.  It just seemed like there was less foot traffic at the stores this year, and this, of course, this impacts the total.  Still, the heart of Kauai’s people continues to be so generous to the food bank and I am humbled by their support of this important organization.

I think everyone understands the concept and our theme this year:  IF CAN, CAN. A lot of people just can’t give this year (our demand for services is up 48% over last year).  But IF CAN, the community of Kauai once again topped the charts in aloha!”
